The Transport Minister of Delhi, Kailash Gehlot announced on Twitter that the government will allow old, yet fit, diesel cars to be retrofitted with an electric powertrain.
Gehlot wrote on Twitter that the Delhi transport department will “empanel manufacturers of pure electric kit by approved testing agencies. Once empanelled this’ll enable vehicles to continue plying here beyond 10 yrs”
Earlier, the National Green Tribunal (NGT) has imposed a complete ban on all petrol vehicles that are more than 15 years old and diesel vehicles that are over 10 years old from running on roads within Delhi’s national capital region (NCR).
It is good news for the people who don’t want to let their old, yet fit diesel cars to send to the scrap yard. Earlier the government came with a vehicle scrappage policy for the old vehicles in the car owner gets multiple benefits of scrapping their old car.
Now the old car owners of Delhi can convert their old cars to an electric cars with the help of pure electric kit by approved testing agencies. This will not only help people who can’t afford a new car but also it will help those who have a strong attachment with their old cars.
As per some reports, about 38 lakh vehicles cannot technically be driven inside Delhi for they have crossed their “age limit” and in that number 3 lakh, diesel cars are included.
While this announcement does not provide any relief to people who don’t want to convert their old car to electric one and want to keep it as it is.
This step of the government will boost the internal combustion engine (ICE) to the electric conversion industry and it will also help the consumer to identify which manufacturer is good for converting old car to electric car.
Although the transport minister of Delhi Kailash Gehlot has only mentioned about the conversion of diesel cars to electric vehicles (EVs), the statement “Delhi is now open to ICE to electric retrofitting”, does mean that old petrol cars can also be converted to EVs in order for Delhiites to be able to use them post their pre-set age limit.
Details of the agencies that are approved to convert old diesel vehicles to Electric Vehicles will be out soon. And also it is still not known that the converted EVs would need to be registered again or if they will be certified as “green vehicles” to given the EV-specific number plate bearing the existing details.
In addition, the transport minister also announced on Twitter that pure-electric light commercial vehicles (L5N and N1) will be allowed to ply and park on Delhi’s roads even during “no entry” hours.
