What is Bharat NCAP?
Bharat New Car Assessment Programme (Bharat NCAP), inaugurated on August 22, has been introduced by Nitin Gadkari, the Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways. Scheduled for implementation from October 1, 2023, this visionary initiative aims to elevate the safety standards of vehicles within India, with a specific focus on vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes.
Who Launched Bharat NCAP?
The honor of launching Bharat NCAP falls upon Nitin Gadkari, the Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways. His vision and commitment to enhancing road safety in the country are embodied in this program.

Objectives of Bharat NCAP
Bharat NCAP has a multi-faceted objective:
- To bolster the safety landscape of India’s roads by assigning star ratings to cars based on their performance in rigorous safety assessments.
- To comprehensively evaluate both adult occupant (AOP) and child occupant (COP) safety, facilitating consumers in making informed decisions when purchasing cars.
- To align with the government’s ambition of fostering an “aatmanirbhar” (self-reliant) automobile industry, contributing to the nation’s standing as a global automobile hub.
Compliance with Bharat NCAP Norms
The program introduces stringent norms that vehicles need to adhere to in order to achieve favorable safety ratings. These norms encompass various aspects such as crashworthiness, occupant safety, and the incorporation of safety features like Electronic Stability Programme (ESP) and pedestrian protection measures.
How Cars Will Be Selected for Crash Tests
The process of selecting cars for crash tests is designed to ensure fairness and accuracy. Manufacturers and importers are mandated to submit applications (Form 70-A) to the designated government agency. From these submissions, cars will be randomly chosen for crash tests. This impartial selection procedure involves representatives from both the manufacturer and the Bharat NCAP team. Subsequent to the tests, results will be shared with the manufacturer and require approval from the Bharat NCAP Standing Committee. The Central Institute of Road Transport (CIRT) will then handle the publication and certification process following the public disclosure of crash test outcomes.
Types of Crash Tests Included in Bharat NCAP
Bharat NCAP incorporates a range of crash tests to ensure holistic safety evaluation:
- Front Impact Test: Simulating a frontal collision, this test assesses the structural integrity of the vehicle and the protection it offers to occupants.
- Side Impact Test: Evaluating protection in a side collision scenario, commonly occurring at junctions, this test is crucial for comprehensive safety assessment.
- Side Impact Pole Test: This specific test examines the vehicle’s performance when colliding with a pole from the side, assessing the protection provided to occupants.
- Future of EVs: Although electric vehicles (EVs) are not presently part of the protocol, the government plans to include them in the near future, showcasing its commitment to holistic safety standards.
In conclusion, Bharat NCAP is poised to redefine vehicle safety in India. Its comprehensive approach, stringent norms, and alignment with global safety standards mark a significant stride toward safer roads and a more secure automotive landscape.
